Croatia Update

Somewhat to my surprise, Sophie feels very relaxed here after all. I’ve had a few genuinely curious glances but nothing offensive or overtly unfriendly. Very pleasantly surprised by this.

Maybe this is what it is like in a society where there has not yet been effort expended by populist politicians, the far right, and hostile foreign influence in stirring up hatred and fear of the unusual, unknown, unconventional and non-binary? That’s my working theory.

I have therefore packed away my boy-clothes, and am concentrating upon creating enough outfits for the rest of my time here from the few items I did bring for Sophie. Challenging but not impossible. I’ll also be flying back as Sophie too, so that’s another outfit to consider as well.

Have just added another 21kg to my baggage allowance for my flight home. Through good fortune and careful cultivation of personal relationships, I have (after visiting for three years in a row) now gained access to the very best locally produced olive oil, locally produced vinegar, locally produced radija, and locally produced wine. The stuff kept hidden from the tourists! As with much in life, it’s all down to who you know and how well.
